Member Spotlight: Meet Harpist Sarah Thompson

By Matt Holland

In this month’s member spotlight, we’re thrilled to highlight the inspiring journey of harpist Sarah Thompson. From discovering the harp as a teen to building a thriving performance career, Sarah’s story is a testament to passion, perseverance, and creativity. Her unique experiences as a professional musician have given her wisdom and valuable lessons for performers seeking to do more of what they love.

Becoming a Harpist

Sarah Thompson didn’t grow up dreaming of playing the harp, but after a moment of unexpected inspiration, she gave it a try. What started as a curious new musical challenge quickly became a meaningful part of her life and career.

From Piano Keys to Harp Strings

Sarah began harp lessons at 13 years old. Already experienced in playing both the piano and flute, she was looking for a new instrument. “I had never heard a harp before or had even seen a harp,” Sarah said. “However, after having a spiritual epiphany, I decided the harp was an instrument I wanted to play.” Due to similarities with the piano, Sarah was quick to learn the harp. “The main challenge was learning the correct technique,” she explained. “However, within 6 months, I was playing early intermediate music.”

Remarkably, it took just two and a half years before Sarah was landing local gigs in her hometown. “One of the first gigs I played was for a fundraiser with many city officials in attendance,” she recalled. “By the time I was ready to go to college, I had played enough events to pay for my first year’s books.”

Playing with Passion and Purpose

As her experience grew, so did her passion — not just for the instrument, but for the art of performing. “I truly love performing for people,” she said. “After every gig, I beam with joy and cannot stop smiling. That alone keeps me motivated.” Her repertoire began to reflect her bold and creative spirit, leaning into unexpected genres. “I prefer playing modern/contemporary music,” Sarah shared. “I love the challenge that some rock songs provide, allowing my creative side to tackle a tough piece.”

More recently, Sarah took part in a meaningful musical effort following the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Joining forces with other harpists in the area, she helped organize a benefit concert called 1000 Strings. “Over 20 harpists were on stage, jamming with one another in a live recording,” Sarah said. “We raised over $3,500 for the MusiCares organization.”

Using GigSalad

GigSalad: How did you first hear about GigSalad, and what made you decide to sign up?

Sarah Thompson: I first heard about GigSalad 10 years ago from a colleague. I decided to sign up because I had relocated to a new area and was hoping to take a gig or two here and there.

GS: What features do you find the most helpful on GigSalad?

ST: Knowing if the lead is a direct lead has been very helpful. I also appreciate it when the potential client shares their budget range. Also, having an expiration time frame is a wonderful feature.

Client Communication

GS: You always aim to respond to potential clients promptly. How do you make it easy for yourself to reply quickly? Do you have any techniques that have improved your chances of bookings?

ST: Gigs come in at various times during the day, and I have different quote templates saved on the website, which I use to make things a little more streamlined for myself. I like to send additional messages to the potential client after I know they have viewed the quote to follow up and see if they have any questions.

GS: You offer consultations virtually or over the phone for clients. What kinds of details do you make sure to discuss? How has this practice helped your success?

ST: I offer consultations after the booking. For wedding ceremonies, I offer virtual consultations, while I offer phone consultations for other events. During these consultations, I discuss logistics (arrival time to set up, breaks if needed, parking, and if there are any stairs) as well as what type of vibe the client is looking for and music selections. For wedding ceremonies, I also talk to the couple about specific songs during the processionals/recessional, as well as spending a little time getting to know them as a couple.

Words of Wisdom

GS: What are some must-have tools or gear for a harpist (or musician in general)?

ST: Outside of the harp, I always travel with my own stool and stand. For outdoor gigs, I have a mat to put the harp on in the event I am not on concrete. An amp and microphone are very helpful, too. As someone who plays from an iPad, I ensure I have an external portable charger and an iPad cooler (which attaches to the iPad) for those hot outdoor gigs.

GS: What advice did a mentor or teacher give you that you’d like to pass on to others?

ST: My favorite conductor once told me, “Take responsibility for your talent.” No one is going to help you to fulfill your dream more than yourself. Network with people, seek out the jobs, know your worth and charge accordingly, and always advocate for yourself. That’s what taking responsibility for your talent means.
